Physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and occupational therapists all recommend hot and cold therapies in their practice. Heat works by improving circulation and blood flow to particular areas of the body. Temperature fluctuation can help painful muscles and increase flexibility. Heat can also assist with healing damaged tissues. Cold therapy works by reducing blood to particular areas and can dramatically reduce inflammation and swelling especially joints and tendons. This educational program will review the process of hot and cold tissue modalities, physiologic effects, indications, and contraindications. We will also review documentation and emerging technologies.
