Healthy feet and nails are significant aspects of every patient’s overall well-being but are often overlooked during medical exams. It is essential to offer a holistic approach to patient’s health assessment encouraging patient to be proactive in their care foot and nail health care. However, high risk patients will require a focused, comprehensive foot and nail assessment, specific interventions, and on-going support. Early detection of any changes in feet and nails affecting mobility, sensation, and balance can help prevent further complications, especially in the aging population. Utilize assessment tools to aid in determining severity of problem(s) and refer to specialist as needed. Education is a vital component of all patients’ plan of care including appropriate footwear and socks. Reinforce information specific to each patient’s need with verbal explanations, demonstrations, and written material.
Objectives
Upon completion of the program, the participant will be able to:
- Name 3 characteristics of foot and nails commonly found during circulation assessment.
- Identify three (3) components of foot and nail assessment.
- List 3 common types of nail deformities.
