All wounds are contaminated with bacteria, but not all wounds will develop infections. Managing bacterial bioburden is an essential component of wound care management. There are valuable resources to assist in determining wounds with harmful bacteria that can delay wound healing, such as the mnemonic, NERDS and STONES which notes specific signs and symptoms for localized or spreading wound infections. During wound assessment, evaluate patient risk factors that can contribute to wound infections, along with identifying bacteria via a swab culture or biopsy.
